YES Network suffered a major on-air audio issue that enraged New York Yankees fans on Tuesday.
TV viewers complained the sound was heavily distorted during New York’s away clash against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Some of the viewers said the “creepy” sound made them wonder whether the Yankees game was broadcast through a speakerphone or a PA system.
Others added it evoked memories of sports contests from decades ago.
“Sounds like I’m listening to @RealMichaelKay broadcast a baseball game in 1943,” one fan posted on X.
“Did anyone else’s audio for @YESNetwork go out? Or is my tv just doing weird things?” another asked.
“Why does my @YESNetwork sound like an AM radio,” a third said.
“It’s 2024 and it sounds like I’m listening to a radio broadcast from 1942. Get it together,” one wrote.
The problem lasted several minutes and seemed to have been fixed sometime around the fourth inning.
Not long after, the Yankees gave their fans more reasons to be upset.
They allowed Ernie Clement and Daulton Varsho to score off Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s hit at the bottom of the fourth, t, firing the Blue Jays 3-1 ahead.
Having claimed a 3-1 win over the Toronto side on Monday, New York entered the game with a 12-5 record while their rivals were 9-8.
The two teams will finish the three-game series on Wednesday.
Three days later, the Yankees will honor their longtime play-by-play radio announcer John Sterling.
After a 36-year run as the voice of the Yankees and a 64-year broadcast career, Sterling announced his retirement on Monday.
“I am a very blessed human being,” the veteran sportscaster sad in a statement.
“I have been able to do what I wanted, broadcasting for 64 years.
“As a little boy growing up in New York as a Yankees fan, I was able to broadcast the Yankees for 36 years.
“It’s all to my benefit, and I leave very, very happy. I look forward to seeing everyone again on Saturday.”
The Athletic has reported that Sterling’s retirement is linked to health concerns.
The sportscaster called 5,420 regular-season and 211 postseason Yankees games.
The special ceremony honoring Sterling will take place before New York’s matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.
