There had been mystery surrounding his cause of death after conflicting reports.

The investigation is being led by Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigations Agency (OIJ).

General director Randall Zuniga gave a press conference Monday with an update.

He said “high levels of carbon monoxide contamination” were found in the family’s hotel room.

Zuniga added, “It’s also important to note that next to room there is a specialized machine room, from which it is believed some form of contamination may have reached the guest rooms, potentially causing the incident.

“The initial investigative findings indicate that the incident was due to this contamination.

“Levels as high as 600 parts per million were detected when the appropriate level in this case should be zero.

“That led us to the line of investigation that this person could have died from inhaling these dangerous gases.”

An official cause of death will be provided after final toxicology results.

NBC News previously that Miller’s sudden death might have been a result of asphyxiation after “possible intoxication after apparently ingesting some food.”

However, that was ruled out by the Costa Rican National Police.

Miller’s dad Brett played 14 years for the New York Yankees.

He was an outfielder and part of the 2009 World Series-winning side

Gardner was also an All-Star in 2015 before retiring after the 2021 season.

The 41-year-old and his wife Jessica announced the tragic death of their son last month

“With heavy hearts we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller,” they said.

“He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation.

“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point,” the statement continued.

“But we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.

“Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile.

“He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends.

“He lived life to the fullest every single day.

“We are so thankful to all who have reached out to offer support and encouragement during this difficult time and we are confident our faith, family, and friends will help us navigate this unimaginable loss.

“Our prayers go out to Miller’s teammates and friends, as well as to all other families who have lost a child far too soon as we share their grief.”
